MOREHEAD CITY — The 2017 Run Crystal Coast Half Marathon saw an uptick in participation this year, thanks to sunny skies and cool temperatures on race day.

The 10th annual event, previously called the Crystal Coast Half Marathon, is made up of a half marathon race, a 10K and a 5K. This year, there were 314 total finishers, up from the 283 last spring. There were 193 runners in the half marathon, 65 in the 10K and 56 in the 5K.

Last year, the event changed hands from longtime owner Butch Robertson to a team of owners affiliated with Junction 311 Endurance Sports in High Point. The business had already developed a series of races in the Triad area, but this race was their first attempt at broadening their network.

Last year, the weather conditions were nearly identical to 2015 – cold and wet. This year featured mostly clear and sunny skies with temperatures in the low-60s, which could explain the increase in participation. There has also been a steady decline in numbers since 2012 when 628 showed up. There were 491 finishers in 2013, 308 in 2014 and 288 in 2015.

While the ownership of the race changed hands, the course itself did not. Although it now starts one block away from its old location, the course is still a scenic out-and-back route beginning on Evans Street on the Morehead City waterfront and continuing over the Atlantic Beach high-rise and toward historic Fort Macon.

This year’s top runner in the half marathon was 24-year-old Brather Cline of Havelock who clocked a 1:25:17 to win it all. Salisbury’s Joshua Readling, 27, clocked a 1:25:54 to finish second overall and second in the male division, while Adam Burke, 39, of Raleigh placed third in both categories with a time of 1:26:22.

Heidi Tucker, 39, of Morehead City was the fastest female with the fourth overall time of 1:27:26. Cary’s Kara Bonneau, 37, placed second in the female division and 11th overall with a time of 1:35:14, and Millie Barritt, 40, of Chapel Hill clocked a 1:35:24 to place third in the division and 12th overall.

Beaufort’s Paul Kelly, 61, was the lone hand-crank participant in the half marathon, clocking a 2:02:26.

Rod Jordan, 51, of Oriental was the top finisher in the 10K race with a time of 45:11. Rock Hill’s Eric Clark, 55, was not far behind Jordan with a second-place time of 45:47, while 30-year-old John Wade of Morehead City placed third in the male division and fourth overall with a time of 49:32.

Janine Garner, 37, of New Bern clocked the fastest time, 49:07, for a female to finish third overall, Morehead City’s Pauline Juhle, 36, was second in the division with a time of 50:20, and Lincolnton’s Tammy Dellinger, 41, clocked 56:08 to finish third in the division.

Clint Bryan, 61, won the 5K race with a time of 16:30 that was barely less than a minute faster than the next two finishers. Raleigh’s Michael Mantini, 56, clocked a 17:08 to finish second overall, and 55-year-old Bernard Prabucki of Carrboro clocked a 17:35 to place third.

Brittany Mossman, 28, of Durham was the fastest overall female in the race with a time of 19:17, Newport’s Evelyn Register, 51, clocked a 25:21 to finish second in the division, and Anna Will, 27, of Mount Pleasant placed third with a time of 25:27.

On the Mark Sports of Greensboro served as the chip-timing company for the event. Additional results from the race and information about next year’s event can be found at runcrystalcoast.com
