Morehead City, N.C.

June 14, 2011

TO THE EDITOR:

I received an invitation to attend Morehead City Elementary School’s 4th and 5th grade students’ special program, “A Patriotic Tribute,” to those who had served and are serving in the military. I accepted.

The children presented the program with confidence, full self-expression and clarity. They used thin sticks to represent crosses, Iwo Jima flag raising and spell USA and crosses over fallen comrades. They integrated signing of several songs.

The entire program was awesome. It was very emotional for us veterans, female and male. Tears filled my eyes as I experienced the most memorable reorganization of my service to my country.

Several other women veterans attended the program with me. At our meeting yesterday, each shared the impact the program on them. For one, it brought back memories of her service in Vietnam. Another shared that she was overcome with emotion during the program.

For others, and me a big THANK YOU young folks for paying tribute to us. You all made us proud. You are the future of our country. We know it is in good hands. Special thanks to Renee Gilpin, director and Jaelyn Stephens, assistant director.

Each military person received a certificate with their name on it for attending the program. On the bottom it said, “Land of the free, Because of the brave.”
