MOREHEAD CITY — Crystal Coast Brewing Co. received three medals in the 2018 NC Brewers Cup, receiving two gold medals and one silver medal.

The NC Brewers Cup is the official beer competition of the N.C. State Fair and the North Carolina Craft Brewers Guild and is a sanctioned Beer Judge Certification Program competition. This is the seventh year of the NC Brewers Cup, and this year’s competition received 624 entries submitted by 76 North Carolina breweries.

“We are thrilled to have 3 of our beers recognized as some of the best in the state,” said Matt Poppe, who along with his parents Charlie and Sidney Poppe own Crystal Coast Brewing. “We are thankful to have so many amazing people here with us who have worked extremely hard to ensure that our beer is of the highest quality. We look forward to serving these award-winning beers and crafting even more great styles for those on the Crystal Coast and across North Carolina to enjoy.”

Crystal Coast Brewing’s winning beers were their Hazy Coast IPA, Crystal Coast IPA and Mojito Cerveza.

The Hazy Coast IPA received a gold medal in the American pale ale category. It features a slightly hazy appearance with citrus hop character. The Crystal Coast IPA, one of the brewery’s flagship beers, earned a silver medal in the American pale ale category. Finally, the Mojito Cerveza, a unique pale lager, was named gold in the fruit beer category. This beer was brewed with hand-zested limes, lime juice and mint to create a taste that mimics the well-known drink.

“We are pretty stoked to have won these awards,” head brewer Billy Smith said. “Through trial and error, we’ve found some gems that have led us to this success. We’re excited to continue putting together some more stellar products and continue keeping the thirst of our loyal patrons quenched!”

Crystal Coast Brewing and all other medalists will be on display in the Education Building at the N.C. State Fair in Raleigh from Thursday through Sunday, Oct. 21. Medals will be presented to winners at the annual awards banquet held Wednesday, Nov. 7 at the N.C. Craft Brewers Conference.

Crystal Coast Brewing is a family-owned microbrewery located in Morehead City, with taprooms in both Morehead City and Atlantic Beach. Opened in 2017, the brewery produces various styles, primarily focused on lagers and IPAs. Crystal Coast’s goal is to create a superior craft beer using only the highest quality ingredients, many of which are locally sourced.
