MOREHEAD CITY — Crystal Coast Brewing Co. won seven medals at the 2019 Carolinas Championship of Beer, including a gold medal.

The Carolinas Championship of Beer competition is held in Hickory, as part of the Hickory Hops brewer’s festival, April 26-27. Judging took place by a blind panel of certified judges, experienced judges and brewers. Most of the awards were announced April 26, the night before the festival, at a brewer’s party for the participating breweries.

This is the 14th year of the competition and getting in can be a challenge in and of itself. Breweries must be invited to participate, and there’s a waiting list to get in. Crystal Coast entered 10 beers and was awarded a medal for seven of them.

“We are thrilled to be recognized for the quality of our craft beer,” Crystal Coast Brewing owner Charlie Poppe said. “Everyone on our team here at Crystal Coast has a common goal to make great tasting, high quality beer, and awards like this really show the hard work and effort that we all put in together.”

Crystal Coast Brewing’s winning beers were their Eastern Bock Turtle Amber Lager, Core Sound Oatmeal Stout, Black Pelican Maple Porter, Money Island Black Lager, Crossroads IPA, Helles Lager and Kill Devil Belgian Golden Ale.

The Kill Devil was awarded a gold medal as a belgian strong golden ale. It is a seasonal offering from Crystal Coast brewed to style and sits at a higher alcohol by volume content of 8.3%.

“Wow it’s such an honor to have won so many awards at this year’s Carolinas Championship of Beers,” head brewer Bill Smith said. “I thought we’d win a couple medals, but no way did I think we’d come away with seven! As awesome as this is, all I can say is we’re just going to keep on keeping on and continue to brew some of the finest beer in eastern Carolina.”

Crystal Coast Brewing is a family-owned microbrewery located in Morehead City, with a taproom in Atlantic Beach. Opened in 2017, the brewery produces various styles, primarily focusing on lagers and IPAs. It was last awarded in fall 2018, winning two gold medals and a silver medal in the North Carolina Brewer’s Cup at the North Carolina State Fair in Raleigh.
