Richard Allan Farrington, 83, of Emerald Isle, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2019, at the Crystal Coast Hospice House in Newport surrounded by family.

A celebration of life is at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Emerald Isle Baptist Church with the Rev. Freddie Braswell officiating.

Richard was born Dec. 18, 1935, to the late William Unsworth Farrington and Gertrude Souther Farrington.

Richard attended North Kingstown High School in North Kingstown, R.I., where he was a standout football player for the Skippers. Even with a potential football scholarship on the line, Richard, and many of his classmates, felt called to enlist in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1954. While faithfully serving his country during the Vietnam War, Richard was promoted to captain. Richard also served as crew chief for HMX-1, the marine helicopter squadron responsible for transportation of the president of the United States of America, where he served President Lyndon B. Johnson. After his retirement from the USMC, he began a career with the N.C. Department of Transportation while attending Carteret Tech for accounting. However, Richard ultimately chose his true love and eventually became a commercial fisherman.

Richard, lovingly known as “Pops,” was a devoted father, son, grandfather and great-grandfather. He spent six years in St. Petersburg, Fla., as caregiver for his mother, Gertrude, and aunt, Marion Powell, until their final days. Richard was a humble, hardworking and kind soul who loved his family more than anything. He also loved fishing, hunting and walks on the Bogue Inlet Fishing Pier.

He is survived by his daughter, Sally McLohon and husband Greg of Wilmington; sons, Richard Allan Farrington Jr., William “Billy” Farrington and wife Terri and James “Jimmy” Farrington and wife Kristi, all of Emerald Isle; 12 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Susan Jean Farringtn; granddaughter, Holly Farrington Betts; and a brother, James E. Farrington.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to the SECU Crystal Coast Hospice House, 100 Big Rock Weigh, Newport, NC 28570.
