Part one: Let’s talk the issues in 25 words or less.

1. Do you support the county sales tax referendum? What about the bond referendum for schools?

I support both bond referendums. Bonds are a cost-effective means of financing infrastructure needs without placing a heavy burden on the backs of the taxpayers.

2. What is the most pressing issue facing the district you are running to represent?

Distinguishing between wants and needs and using that information to lessen the burden on county taxpayers.

3. Do you support offshore testing, drilling and development off the state’s coast?

With the extensive amount of regulation, bureaucracy involved in the testing of offshore waters, there is no possibility of offshore activities and it’s a non-issue.

4. How can the county better adapt to climate change and prepare for future storms?

Future storms are a scientific fact. Climate change is not. The county deals in the real world and does an excellent job preparing for storms.

5. Do you support school reopening in person, virtually or a hybrid model given the coronavirus pandemic?

I support our elected officials on the board of education to make those decisions and they should be given the power, not the governor.

6. Would you like to see the Confederate monument remain on courthouse grounds in Beaufort?

It was erected to honor the service of a group of citizens, not as a political statement. Should not be taken down as political statement.

Part two: Meet your candidate.

I have lived in Beaufort my entire life of 68 years, except for four years at The Citadel, where I obtained a BA in history. After graduation, I went to work helping one of my three brothers in the petroleum business. Today, I am still helping and he has retired. I've expanded that business into a tire business, convenience stores, boat storage rentals, as well as commercial and residential rentals.

I know the system in Carteret County well because I have at some point dealt with practically every department in county and municipal government in my 45 years of experience. For the past 3.5 years I have served as your county commissioner from District 5.

I love my job and if you will look at our record, you will see that I along with the other commissioners have done it well. I am proud to serve you. The taxpayer has and always will be my No. 1 priority.
