OCEAN — The Croatan girls basketball team got handed its first loss of the season at home Wednesday, falling to Swansboro 48-42.

The defeat came one day after the Cougars (8-1 overall) secured first place in the 1A/2A Coastal 8 Conference with a 51-44 victory at East Carteret. Luckily for the Cougars, who are 4-0 in league play, the contest with Swansboro (4-5) was nonconference.

MOREHEAD CITY — The West Carteret wrestling team’s senior night Wednesday was a short one.

Jacksonville led 15-12 after five matches, and that was the end of the grappling. The next nine matches resulted in forfeits with the Cardinals forfeiting six times – they forfeited once in the first five matches – and the teams combining for two double forfeits in a 54-15 final.

BURGAW — East Carteret dropped a pair of 1A/2A Coastal 8 Conference wrestling matches Wednesday in a tri-match with Richlands at Pender.

Richlands handed the Mariners a 42-36 loss, and Pender delivered a 46-30 setback for the Beaufort squad. Thanks to its win over East and a previous win over Lejeune, Pender earns the lone 1A playoff spot from the league.

East fell to 9-13 overall and wrapped up conference action with a 3-4 mark.
