NEWPORT — The Croatan boys tennis team secured its sixth league title in a row Wednesday with a 7-2 win over Richlands.

The Cougars (12-0) came into the 1A/2A Coastal 8 Conference contest with a 4-0 mark while the Wildcats (7-3) were 3-1. Croatan took four of the six singles matches and swept the doubles matches to take a two-game lead in the standings with just one match remaining.

The club will finish out the regular season Monday versus Southwest Onslow. The Stallions (0-7) are 0-4 in the league.

Four of the six singles matches against Richlands went to tiebreakers with the Cougars taking three of them.

Croatan’s Graham Guthrie and J.P. McLean fell on opposite ends of the win-loss ledger in similar matches that saw the first two sets flip. Guthrie beat Alex Blanchong 6-0, 0-6, 11-9 at No. 1, and at No. 2, Richlands’ Dylan Stiles got by McLean 3-6, 6-3, 10-5.

Croatan’s Zach Simonette improved to 9-0 this season at No. 4 with a 6-0, 7-6 (7-3) win over Jordan Roed. Teammate Brodie Aud upped his mark to 7-1 at No. 5 with a tough 6-4, 5-7, 10-8 victory over Tucker Ramsey.

Will Swiber stayed unbeaten at 8-0 in No. 6 singles play with a 6-0, 6-0 shutout of Richlands’ Zachery Spalding.

Connor Hogan and Swiber beat Stiles and Spalding 8-4 to go to 8-0 in No. 3 doubles.

Mason Fails and Guthrie got by Blanchong and Carson Schmitt 8-4 at No. 1 doubles, while McLean and Simonette soared past Roed and Ramsey 8-1 at No. 2 doubles.

Earlier in the week, the Cougars cruised past White Oak 8-1 with Guthrie, Fails, McLean, Simonette, Aud and Swiber sweeping the singles matches.
