MOREHEAD CITY — No one in the Coastal Plain League is hotter than the Marlins.

The collegiate wood-bat squad is riding an eight-game winning streak after sweeping a doubleheader Tuesday with 7-6 and 6-3 victories over the Holly Springs Salamanders.

Morehead City is tied for the best record in the CPL with a 16-7 mark. The Gastonia Grizzlies are also 16-7.

Only two other teams in the league have won more than three games in a row with the Peninsula Pilots (11-11) capturing three consecutive and the Fayetteville SwampDogs (12-10) taking four straight.

MOREHEAD CITY — Two former Morehead City Marlins will be playing professional baseball this season.

Seton Hill redshirt sophomore Craig Lewis was drafted in the 33rd round of the Major League Baseball (MLB) Draft by the Baltimore Orioles earlier this month, while Mount Olive senior Zach Vennaro signed a contract to play for the Can-Am League Ottawa Champions.

Both players were on the roster last summer when the Fish captured their first-ever Coastal Plain League Petitt Cup championship.

MOREHEAD CITY — West Carteret and East Carteret were well represented on the N.C. Softball Coaches Association All-District Teams.

The Patriots had six players on the NCSCA District 2 3A Team, while the Mariners had three on the 1A team, including 1A District 2 Player of the Year Ashlyn Guthrie.
