John “Buster” Alec Willis, 73, of Broad Creek, passed away Saturday, Sept. 28, 2013, at his home surrounded by family.
A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Broad Creek Cemetery with the Rev. Wesley Holmes, Vann Salter and Richard Hocutt, who is a friend of the family, officiating.
Buster served his country with eight years in the U.S. Coast Guard, including a tour in Vietnam, and was a commercial fisherman. He was a life member of VFW Post 9960 in Swansboro, and a 3rd degree Mason, a member of Accomac Chincoteaue, Va., Masonic Lodge 243.
He is survived by four children Marilyn Guthrie and husband Andrew of Broad Creek, John Alec Willis Jr., of Mill Creek, Irma McCabe of Mill Creek and Lisa Lasche of California; seven grandchildren, Drew Guthrie and wife Crystal, Elaina “Brandi” Wingfield and husband Chris, Megan MacLoyd and husband Brad, Alexandria Willis, Jacob Willis, April Guthrie and husband Thomas, and Tommy Guthrie; six great-grandchildren; a sister Harriett Salter; and significant other Patricia “Sissy” Piner.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Garland and Marietta Willis, and a son Alec John Willis.
Visitation is 4 to 6 p.m. today at Munden Funeral Home.
