Patricia “Pat” Chur O’Grady, 93, a long-time resident of Swansboro and Emerald Isle, and previously of Montclair, N.J., where she raised her children, passed away Thursday, April 18, 2019, at Pruitt Health-Sea Level.

A private family service will be held.

Pat was a loving mother and grandmother; she cherished all animals and nature and loved the ocean. She was a world-renowned breeder of award-winning Maine Coon cats for several decades as a member of the Cat Fanciers’ Association and The International Cat Association. She was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., attended Summit High School in Summit, N.J., and Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., and was a successful fashion model in New York City.

Pat married the late James F. O’Grady in 1947.

She is survived by her children, Camille O’Grady of San Francisco, Calif., Patrick Brian W. O’Grady and Christina of Claremont, Calif., Kathleen O. Ashenfelter and James of Glen Ridge, N.J., Michelle O’Grady of Edgartown, Mass., and Leigh O. Molitor and Jerome of Chester, N.J.; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her parents, Walter P. and Olga Muldener Chur; husband, James F. O’Grady; sister, Carol C. Ritchie; and sons, Michael T., Jeffrey P. and James F. O’Grady Jr.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Pat’s honor to the Outer Banks Wildlife Shelter online at or 100 Wildlife Way, Newport, NC 28570, or make a contribution of your own choice to an organization whose goal is to improve the global environment.
