Philip Alexander Parker Jr., 59, of Beaufort, died Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2013, at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville.
His funeral is at 3 p.m. Sunday at Purvis Chapel AME Zion Church with the Rev. Margaret Blackmon officiating.
He was a member of Purvis Chapel AME Zion Church and served as class leader, superintendent of Sunday school, member of the trustee board, men’s choir and mass choir. His civic activities included membership in Hero Masonic Lodge No. 248. His cultural and arts involvement included board member of Purvis Inc., member of Purvis Players and Menhaden Chanteymen. He was awarded the N.C. Folk Heritage Award by the N.C. Arts Council and the Order of the Long Leaf Pine by Gov. Beverly Perdue-Eaves.
He is survived by his wife, Teresa Murray Parker; daughter, Porsha Parker of Greensboro; one sister, Phyllis J. Parker of Beaufort; and one brother, Ray Mitchell Fenderson of Virginia.
A ritualistic service by Hero Masonic Lodge No. 248 is at 5 p.m. Saturday in Oscar’s Mortuary memorial chapel in New Bern, followed by visitation of friends and other times at the residence.
