NEWPORT — County deputies arrested Timothy Wayne Telford Jr., 19, of U.S. Marine Corps Barracks 4867, Cherry Point in connection with a shooting that took place at the Little Doo Mud Bog on Tom Mann Road.
At about 11 p.m. Saturday deputies responded to the reported shooting in the parking lot of the mud bog. According to the sheriff’s department, Mr. Telford fled the scene prior to deputies arriving; however, he was followed by two witnesses to the Compass Landing apartment complex located at 900 Old Fashion Highway, next to the Food Lion in Newport.
Deputies James McClenny and Lori Pittman stated that multiple victims reported Mr. Telford was driving recklessly, cutting donuts in the parking lot of the mud bog. He was then confronted by witnesses in an effort to stop his erratic driving and allegedly struck one of the men with his truck, furthering the altercation. Mr. Telford then allegedly pulled out a .40 caliber handgun and pointed it at several people before firing three rounds into the crowd.
Deputies took Mr. Telford into custody without incident and located the hidden handgun in a nearby wooded area. None of the victims sustained any gunshot wounds and the victim struck by the vehicle was not seriously injured, declining medical attention.
Mr. Telford was charged with four counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, two counts of assault by pointing a gun and one count of going armed to the terror of the public. He was placed in the county jail under a $50,000.00 bond and is scheduled for his first court appearance today (Monday).
