SOUTH RIVER — Authorities report a car drove off Merrimon Road, rolled over and landed on its hood in a ditch near South River about 6 p.m. Tuesday resulting in two people being trapped in the vehicle.

Reports indicate the driver, who was female, sustained chest injuries and the male passenger sustained cuts and bruises.

The vehicle left the roadway at the intersection of Merrimon Road and Yeatman Lane, rolled at least once and ended up on its top in a ditch, pinning the pair in the car.

After being cut from the car, they were transported to Carteret General Hospital in Morehead City.

Although EastCare rescue helicopter was requested, at that time they were unable to fly due to inclement weather.

Crews from South River-Merrimon, Beaufort Fire Department, North River Fire Department and Beaufort EMS responded to the wreck.

The names and conditions of the injured were not available at presstime. The N.C. Highway Patrol is investigating.
