BEAUFORT — A town resident has been charged with attempted murder after authorities report he put a gun to another man’s head Saturday during a gathering at the southern end of the Marshallberg Road at The Straits.
Willard Jeffrey Sanders, 49, 232 Beaufort Towne Apartments, is charged with attempted first-degree murder with a deadly weapon with intent to kill as well as communicating threats to Jerry Lee Faircloth Jr., 42, of Davis.
He is also charged with assault with a deadly weapon and communicating threats against Jody Faircloth, assault with a deadly weapon against Wesley Clay, assault by pointing a gun at Michael Neal, assault by pointing a gun at Cynthia Clay and going armed to the terror of the public for discharging a firearm in a “county park,” referring to that area, which has been developed for use.
He remains in the county jail under a $250,000 bond.
According to Capt. Jason Wank with the County Sheriff’s Department, deputies responded to a “shots fired” call at the community park at the end of Marshallberg Road about 5:30 p.m. Saturday.
An investigation revealed Mr. Sanders got out of a vehicle and fired numerous rounds from a .22-caliber handgun at the ground in front of several victims.
He then pointed the gun at the head of Jerry Lee Faircloth Jr. and told him he was going to kill him and fired a shot, missing Mr. Faircloth’s head.
Mr. Sanders returned to his vehicle and fled the scene. He was located several hours later and taken into custody by sheriff’s deputies. Lt. Tom Malshagen with the sheriff’s department recovered the handgun used in the assault.
