NEWPORT — A motorcyclist died Saturday from injuries sustained in an accident Friday at Highway 70 and Tom Mann Road in Newport.
Julian March with marketing and public relations with New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington confirmed Wednesday that Cordell Vann, 24, of New Bern, died from his injuries.
N.C. Highway Patrol Trooper Shane Powell said Wednesday that the accident occurred when Jeannette Rhodes of Newport turned left onto Highway 70 off of Tom Mann Road, hitting a 2008 Pontiac driven by Iris Levine of Havelock in the side as Ms. Levine was traveling south on Highway 70.
Ms. Rhodes’ vehicle stopped broadside on the highway, causing Mr. Vann, also traveling south on Highway 70 on a 2004 Kawasaki, to strike Ms. Rhodes.
Trooper Powell said Ms. Rhodes was transported to Carteret Health Care in Morehead City with injuries. Mr. Vann was airlifted to New Hanover Regional Medical Center with serious injuries.
Trooper Powell said he had no update on Ms. Rhodes’ condition and the wreck is still under investigation.
He also said there were a few minor accidents that occurred in relation to the wreck, resulting in no injuries.
According to scanner reports at the time of the wreck, first responders from multiple departments, including Newport and Broad and Gales Creek, reported to the scene, as did N.C. Highway Patrol.
