MOREHEAD CITY — A traffic accident Tuesday night totaled two vehicles and sent both drivers to Carteret Health Care.

N.C. Highway Patrol Sgt. M.A. Riggs said that just after 7 p.m. Tuesday a green Mercedes SUV was traveling east on Highway 24 near the Brandywine Bay subdivision. The male driver drifted into the westbound lane. At around that time, a female driver in a Fiat was traveling west in the same area.

Sgt. Riggs said the SUV’s driver tried to correct his drifting and swerved into the center turning lane, just as the Fiat driver did the same trying to avoid the oncoming vehicle.

“They ended up making contact,” Sgt. Riggs said.

According to Morehead City Police Deputy Chief Bryan Dixon, an off-duty Morehead City Police officer was passing by and remained on the scene until Highway Patrol arrived. Morehead City fire/EMS personnel were also called in and transported both drivers to the hospital.

Sgt. Riggs said the accident is still under investigation as of Wednesday. He said he believes the driver of the SUV, who was charged for the collision, might have been distracted while driving.

“He wasn’t impaired,” Sgt. Riggs said.

The condition of the drivers as of Wednesday afternoon wasn’t known.
