NEWPORT — The N.C. Department of Transportation will close turn lanes on Highway 70 at the intersection of Howard Boulevard and Nine Foot Road Tuesday night. This work is part of a project to upgrade the intersection for pedestrian crossings.

The right turn lanes from Highway 70 in both directions onto Nine Foot Road and Howard Boulevard will be closed from 7 p.m. Tuesday until 6 a.m. Wednesday.

Drivers from either direction can get around the closures by continuing through the intersection, and then using the nearby turnarounds to turn left and head back to either Howard Boulevard or Nine Foot Road.

This is a great change, as many people cross over 70 and it's a dangerous crossing. Glad to see the county making changes to Newport. Please add in a sidewalk down 9 Foot road for all the people who walk up and down it to the shopping center from the trailer parks - it's a desperately needed improvement.
