William Wingfield, 71; service Friday

William “Tom” Thomas Wingfield, 71, of Newport, died Saturday, Feb. 17, 2018, at his home. 

His service is at 10 a.m. Friday at Gethsemane Memorial Park near Newport with the Rev. Charlie Smith officiating.

Tom graduated from Appalachian State University with a bachelor’s degree in business. He honorably served his country in the U.S. Army, including a tour of duty in Vietnam. He had a long and successful career in the textile industry, which culminated in retiring from Burlington Industries and Thomaston Mills as a plant manager. He enjoyed the water while fishing on his boat. He loved his wife, sons, grandson and little dogs.

He is survived by his sons, Chris Wingfield and wife Elaina of Grimesland and Jamie Wingfield of Newport; grandson, William Marshall Wingfield; brother, Johnny Wingfield of Tobaccoville; sister, Carolyn Wingfield Smith and husband Charlie Smith of Havelock; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 30 years, Marcia Garrison Wingfield; parents, Garland and Evelyn Wingfield; and sister-in-law, Shirley Wingfield.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested to be sent to the National Stroke Association, 9707 East Easter Lane, Suite B, Centennial, Colo. 80112.
