PORTSMOUTH, Va. — The Coast Guard rescued two teenage boys Sunday after the teens' 16-foot Jon boat became disabled and started taking on water in Currituck Sound, N.C., near aids to navigation marker 99.

Currituck County 911 dispatch initially contacted Coast Guard Sector North Carolina Command Center watchstanders at approximately 8 a.m., requesting a Coast Guard helicopter for rescue assistance.

Sector North Carolina watchstanders dispatched a crew aboard an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter from Air Station Elizabeth City.

The helicopter crew arrived on scene at approximately 9 a.m. and discovered the teens abandoned their boat and climbed up marker 99.

Boat crews from the N.C. Wildlife Resource Commission and Currituck County were on scene but were unable to approach the teens safely.

The helicopter crew lowered a swimmer, hoisted the two teens into the helicopter and took them to Albermarle Hospital.

Real coxswains? Don't get the guy that overloaded the boat when he was shuttling a group of soldiers out to a Landing Craft in the Pamlico Sound a few years back. He was quick to inform me that he was in command of the vessel until we started to take on water. Idiot!

ask them two boys how they would have preferred to be rescued. i am sure they are just glad to be warm, dry and alive.

How they were rescued was their call. The real question is, what were they doing out there in a 16ft john boat, of all things. Just can't protect people from themselves.

Nice to know that our governmet really works when we need it to. I always pay my taxes and I always hope I don't need the services.

I just saw the wcti news tape release of that helo pickup of two boys and I'm shocked they were rescued in that manner. No excuse for that. Who called for that air lift and having the boys jump in the water? Don't want to hear there was no other way to get people off that aid other than a helo? Where are the real boat coxswains? That was crazy and stupid!
