ATLANTIC BEACH — A 39-year-old man from Kernersville drowned Sunday in the ocean off the beach strand near the Circle district, emergency officials confirmed Thursday.

Fire/EMS Chief Adam Snyder said his department received the emergency call at 8:30 p.m. Sunday. First responders arrived at the beach near a nearby tavern, located in the Circle district – an area consisting of the property directly south of the Fort Macon Road/Atlantic Beach Causeway intersection and the surrounding neighborhoods – where they found the victim.

“Apparently he went out kayaking,” Chief Snyder said. “Someone called 911.”

First responders administered CPR and transported the victim to Carteret Health Care, where he was later pronounced dead.

Chief Snyder declined to release the victim’s name.
