BEAUFORT — The Carteret County Board of Education votes 4-3 Thursday afternoon in a special meeting to close the Marine Science and Technologies Early College High School.

Voting for closing the school were chairman Travis Day and board members Clark Jenkins, Kathryn Chadwick and Brittany Wheatly. Voting against closing the school were vice chairman Jake Godwin and board members Melissa Ehlers and John McLean.

The school just completed its first year this spring with an inaugural class of 50 freshmen. It is located on the campus of Carteret Community College.

Monday, county commissioners, citing uncertainty with the state budget, opted to give the school system the money to fund MaST, but indicated they would rather the school board direct the funds to cover the cost of teaching positions set to be cut for the 2019-20 school year.

Students and parents attended Thursday's meeting to protest the closure.

This is a developing report.
