Ellen Felty Ale, 76, of Flagstaff, Ariz., formerly of Emerald Isle, passed away Thursday, Jan. 3, 2019, in the Elaine Forrest House in Flagstaff after struggling against chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Ellen will be interred in the family plot at Mount Pleasant Methodist Church in Wytheville, Va., tentatively during the late summer of 2019 with a graveside service.

After graduating from Wythe High School in 1960 and Watts School of Nursing in Durham in 1963, she joined Watts Hospital staff until marrying and moving to Hawaii, where she continued to practice intensive care nursing. In 1974, she received her BSN at St. Francis in Illinois and continued working in the healthcare field, holding licenses in six states as her husband transferred with the federal government. As a junior while at Watts School of Nursing, she was inducted into the Santa Filomena Society acknowledging those students who demonstrate leadership qualities and make contributions toward the betterment of the School of Nursing, as well as demonstrating superior nursing abilities and achievement.

She was an avid knitter and world traveler, loved to crochet and work with counted thread. Her passion for needlework culminated in her opening her own needlework store in Schaumburg, Ill., during the late 70s to the mid 80s. Thereafter, she and her husband moved to Maryland and then to Emerald Isle, where she was medically disabled and retired from nursing. Upon her husband’s retirement and then in 2006 they ventured around the country emptying their bucket list, and by happenstance settled in Flagstaff, Ariz., in 2010. Unable to ignore her creativity, she began hand-crafting jewelry to allay her creative itch. This interest was a calming activity as she gently faded away to join her oldest sister Ruth.

The fifth daughter of Edna and Jesse Felty, she is survived by three older sisters, Paige Cochran of Wytheville, Va., and Jane Smith and Doris Miller, both of Greensboro; and her husband of 52 years, Richard.

Memorials may be sent to Northland Hospice and Palliative Care Inc., 452 N. Switzer Canyon Drive, Unit No. A, Flagstaff, AZ, 8600, or Smile Train, P.O. Box 96210, Washington, D.C. 20090.

Grubb Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.grubbfuneralhome.com.
