Steer yourself this weekend to the sixth annual Newport Flea Mall Pro Rodeo.

Double Creek Rodeo Co. based in Eutaw, Ala., members of the Southern Rodeo Association and Southeastern Professional Rodeo Association, will be bringing their show to the Crystal Coast.

Featuring bareback riding, saddle bronc riding, bull riding, calf roping, steer wrestling, team roping, cowgirls barrel racing and cowgirls breakaway roping, the rodeo begins at 8 p.m. July 19 and July 20. Gates open at 6 p.m.

Tickets are $12 for adults, ages 6 to 12 are $6 and 5 and under are free. Food will be for sale onsite plus there will be vendors. Spectators are welcome to use the bleacher seating or bring their own chairs.

Janie Black, manager of the Newport Flea Mall event grounds, said that the rodeo is a great family event full of excitement.

“We bring this event to Newport Flea Mall event grounds for our surrounding area folks to have a night of entertainment,” she said, adding that the rodeo is now an annual event because “We are a small community and there isn’t a lot of things to do around here. As long as people keep attending our events, we will keep having them.”

Every year is unique at the Newport rodeo, she added.

“It is exciting to return each year to see the new riders and all the events,” she said.

“Each night brings a different show with different results from each rider; no animal or rider does the same thing each night,” Ms. Black explained. “You never can tell how things will go each night of the show.”

She said people come from all over to participate in the show, including locals.

“Brandon Chambers, who is a local bull rider, has been a participant in our show for the past several years,” she said, plus “There are riders who come from all over the East Coast states.”

She said the organization loves being able to bring these shows to the Newport Flea Mall for residents to enjoy.

While it takes a lot of work to put these shows on, Ms. Black said, “we work together and make it happen” with the support of the owners of the Newport Flea Mall, Keith Garner, Morgan Garner and Gloria Murdoch.

“With that being said, we couldn’t do this without the help of our sponsors and volunteers that help us year after year,” she said.

“We want everyone to make plans to come out and join us for this exciting event.”

Looking ahead for the event grounds, on Sept. 13-14 there will be a monster truck show, Ms. Black said.

“We are excited about bringing this show in for our folks to have another weekend of special entertainment,” she said.
