Pirates ready for OAC tournament
Tideland News Report
Swansboro Middle School’s wrestling team closed out its regular season in grand fashion on Nov. 24, smashing the visiting Hunters Creek Panthers 66-24.
The win lifts the Pirates to 6-1 and sends them into Saturday’s Onslow Athletic Conference Tournament on a roll.
The championship tourney is slated for 9 a.m. at Swansboro High School.
The Pirates won 10 of 15 bouts against the Panthers, with 10 of them coming via pin.
“I was very impressed with our match against Hunters Creek,” said Swansboro head coach Mark Starlin. “We started out the night by winning four out of the five exhibition matches, and that was huge for the team. They really set the stage for our varsity guys.
“We were very surprised by the big win over Hunters Creek,” he added. “We felt confident that we could beat them, but we didn’t anticipate a win by over 30 points. A large part of our success comes from the team’s growth in a variety of areas, including knowledge of the sport, technique and team unity.”
Starlin said the Pirates’ success this year has been somewhat of a surprise, because the team was so young and inexperienced.
“We started out this year with a very young group,” he said. “In fact more than half of our wrestlers had never wrestled before. When you watch those same wrestlers from the beginning of the year until now it’s like watching a totally different team. The coaches are very proud of the success of our team and remain very confident that we will do very well at the tournament this Saturday.”
Several Pirates will take an undefeated record into Saturday’s tournament, including Brandon Schott at 83 pounds, Jacob Butler (93), Andre Jones (140), Shannon Paris (145) and Michael King (215).
